With the February 2011 earthquake, the Court Theatre lost its home of 36 years. Within two months, an old grain storage shed beside the railway line in Addington was found. We were asked to design a 400 seat theatre and all of the back of house facilities and departments for a budget of $4.6m and to open within 18 weeks. The utilization of readily available materials and components such as portacabins and converted containers, have allowed the Court Theatre and its patrons to come together to celebrate the survival of this iconic cultural institution opening on time and within budget. Awarded Highly Commended by Canterbury Heritage.
