Wilderness Lodge

Main Lodge - 1996; New Units - 2004

Arthurs Pass

Set in the rugged beauty of its alpine location, this tourist lodge grows out of its surroundings.  Its understated forms play a secondary role to the experience of arrival and discovery, which are both skilfully controlled.  The planning is finely tuned to maximize the interaction between the visitor and the environment.

A very carefully controlled palette of timber, concrete and corrugated steel, reflecting the colours of the alpine landscape, lichen, rocks and bush, allows the building to sit comfortably in its environment without losing its own strong identity.
